If you’re a hardcore gamer than by now you have heard about Dead Island or have at least seen the incredible debut trailer that has practically reached viral (heh, go figure) status in what seems like mere moments. If you have not had the fortune of seeing this trailer yet then head on over to youtube and prepare to drool for a few minutes (or more, if you can’t stop replaying it).
See what I mean? Beautiful, right? I haven’t even seen a trailer for a horror film in recent memory that got me as amped up as that did and until this morning I wanted NOTHING to do with anything else zombie related. Let’s face it, the concept has worn itself really damn thin lately. I personally never thought I’d see the day where a nationally broadcast zombie show would see good ratings, let alone receive critical acclaim and THE WALKING DEAD clearly proved me wrong on that front.
As for more about the game itself, details are out and there’s plenty of info out there on any gaming website you can think of. But for those of you who are lazy and can’t be bothered I’ll share a few of the more exciting specs of the game with you (all courtesy of the folks over at IGN.com). Basically the game takes place in a tropical paradise on an island that has become overrun with zombies. There is an emphasis on melee combat rather than the guns we have become used to in the RESIDENT EVIL series, as well as others, with IGN referring to the gameplay as “survival horror with a melee action twist”. Techland, the developers behind the game, are promising a darker zombie tale than we are used to seeing in video games lately, completely unlike the more humorous tone of games like DEAD RISING or ONICHANABRA. To even further differentiate it from other games on the market DEAD ISLAND is presented in first person and contains RPG-esque level progression. Yeah, this is not your run of the mill shovelware.
The game is set to release on PS3, XBOX 360 and PC some time in 2011. Given the early nature of the details, I’d be willing to suspect far more later than sooner. Regardless of when it releases though, this is bound to be one of the more anticipated games of the year. Horror fans rejoice, zombie survival horror has returned.
