Ghosts of the Civil Dead is a dark and gloomy look at the slow decay of sanity and order within the walls of a high tech maximum security prison. A place that was once peaceful for the most part when those incarcerated had such rights as television and various other means of entertainment to keep themselves busy. Drugs were once easy to come by and helped pass the time in a place where many were condemned to spend the rest of their living days. But soon everything would change and the inmates would find themselves without drugs, television, human interaction, or even basic rights causing the entire society to come unglued and explode in violence.
This movie is nothing short of incredible and paints such a sinister and misery filled picture of what it is like to be an inmate in one of the most hellish prisons on earth. With the use of very creative editing in the form of flashes of day to day activities of key inmates mixed in with footage of what is being viewed on their televisions and also police reports given to you in the form of text describing what was about to become of those inside the walls of the prison as things got more out of hand as they slowly took every last right away from the inmates leaving them with nothing but silence and anger, Ghosts of the Civil Dead creates a world made out of fear and suffering leaving you the viewer sick to your stomach at times at the very thought of being in their shoes.
No holds barred honestly and realism causes Ghosts of the Civil Dead to become a real eye opener on how the other side lives those who most never think about or acknowledge as existing outside of television and other media outlets as if they are just characters in various crime dramas. A peek into the world of convicted murders, drug lords, and those who are just simply criminally insane and have ran out of places to be sent. A never ending pressure cooker that continues to become dangerously over heated up until it erupts into chaos Ghosts of the Civil Dead will ensure you live the rest of your life utterly terrified of the prospect of ending up behind bars, having to live with blood thirsty monsters with nothing left to fear or live for.
This political charged film is a must see of all fans of prison dramas and is high on the list of best prison sub-genre films in my book. You can truly feel the sorrow and worthlessness the inmates feel as more and more things are taken from them making their already bleak lives into never ending trips into the deepest depths of hell. Forget scared straight if you want to ensure that your youth never thinks twice about breaking the law and becoming a career criminal sit down and watch Ghosts of Civil Dead with them and explain that this really happens behind the closed doors of prisons across the entire span of the globe some worse than others but all something to be feared and avoided.
On behalf of The Liberal Dead and our own going Ozploitation Files, I give Ghosts of the Civil Dead a much deserved 8 of 10 and award for being way ahead of its time on many levels that have to be witnessed to understand.
