In this new series Jeff Konopka and friends look at back at the films of John Carpenter. The inaugural episode features Jeff and Kristy Jett discussing Carpenter’s first full-length feature, Dark Star. Joing them is special guest Daniel Griffith, director/prodcuer of “Let There Be Light: The Odyssey of Dark Star,” a full length docmentary on the film.
First things first, if you haven’t seen the movie this entry into the series cannot adequately give you the entire interstellar overdrive that is Dark Star. There are spoilers. You’ve had over thirty years to get your butt in the seat and watch the movie. You have been warned (somewhat sarcasticly warned, but warned just the same). Now that we’ve dispensed with the pleasantries, here’s what you’ll be letting your ears in for if you choose to go forth and enjoy this podcast.
Topics include:-Is Dark Star a true Carpenter film? -Dark Star’s documentary and how it was over two times as long as Dark Star itself before editing -Potential Blu Ray release… Potential does not mean you can buy it at Amazon.com -The master of Dark Star sheds some light on Dark Star (my puns runneth over) -Talking to John Carpenter about Dark Star is like putting baby in the corner… no one is allowed to do it. -Kristy Jett reveals the hidden identity of “she who walks behind the tray” . There will be a test on this.
I personally haven’t seen this flick since I was a kid and only recently rewatched it, taped off TV in the mid 80’s on the Late Late Show. The quality was not DVD. It was not Blu Ray. It was barely watcheable in that way that warped VHS is barely watchable, but the film is thoroughly enjoyable.
This marks the beginning of a series that will run through an assortment of Carpenter’s works, the next being Assault on Precinct 13.
