UPDATE: I’ve just been informed by a colleague that at least one of the aforementioned sequels is still slated for production, and release. There isn’t a lot of info available at this time, so we’ll keep you posted. Hopefully this is true.
The good news is, that a “prequel” to Cabin Fever is hitting VOD outlets in less than a month. The bad news is, Cabin Fever 2 left such a bad taste in some viewers’ mouths, that I have no idea if there is even any public interest in such a thing. I was one of the ones that was initially shocked by the badness of Cabin Fever 2, because it had a young but strong cast, and one of my favorite up-and-coming directors attached to the project. The studio intervened so much, though, that Ti West exited before it was even finished, and fought really hard(and unsuccessfully) to have his name removed from the film all together. After a re-watch, though, it is an entertaining little movie. It’s bad, don’t get me wrong, but it’s not without its merits. Be that as it may, it was announced that a prequel, and a couple of sequels would be produced. However, it appears that they’ve now abandoned the idea of doing a sequel to Patient Zero, and just flat-out remaking Roth’s original film instead. It’s unfortunate to know that this is stands alone as a film, now, because I really quite enjoyed it, and was looking forward to see where they’d go from there. In any event, Cabin Fever: Patient Zero is hitting VOD in less than a month, and theaters later in the year. On June 26th, the film will hit “VOD”, but judging by the iTUNES date on the same day that it hits limited theaters (August 1), I would say this means Cable/Satellite only. For those of us that have freed ourselves from the shackles of a TV provider, it looks like we’ll have to wait a little bit longer.
The film is being released by IMAGE Entertainment. View the trailer and the original acquisition press release below.
