Blu-ray Review: The Vincent Price Collection II (Scream Factory)

The first Vincent Price collection from Scream Factory was a pure treasure. When October rolls around, almost nothing puts me in the Halloween mood like a constant stream of Vincent Price films on my TV. Never did I think that Scream could improve upon their original price collection, but when the films that would be included in this new set were announced, I was shocked. The first Vincent Price Collection has some really solid Price films, mostly of a Poe nature, and it was one of the most exciting releases of the year for fans of classic horror. The second set, drops the Poe theme(mostly), and includes some of Price’s most famous, well-regarded films, including a couple of my favorites. The list of films is impressive, and there are extras on most of the films. The packaging is consistent, and equally pleasing to the eyes. Scream Factory’s Blu-ray release of the Vincent Price Collection Volume II is a must-own, especially for those of us that go crazy during October, trying to squeeze in as many horror films as possible. We get House on Haunted Hill and The Last Man On Earth in one set, people. Click here and buy this thing, already.

From the Press Release:

On October 21, 2014, collectors, classic film aficionados and horror enthusiasts will relish the 4-Disc Blu-ray™ release of Scream Factory’s THE VINCENT PRICE COLLECTION Volume II, perfectly timed for Halloween and this year’s holiday gifting season.  This extraordinary collector’s set is an essential movie collection for every home entertainment library and brings together SEVEN Vincent Price masterpiece classics, featuring the first-ever Blu-ray movie presentation of  THE HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL (1959), THE RETURN OF THE FLY (1959), THE COMEDY OF TERRORS (1963), THE RAVEN (1963), THE LAST MAN ON EARTH (1964), THE TOMB OF LIGEIA (1964) and DR. PHIBES RISES AGAIN (1972). Brimming with a bevy of chilling bonus content including audio commentaries with producer/director Roger Corman, actor Brett Halsey, film historians, original theatrical trailers, rare photos and archival materials, this highly-anticipated Blu-ray collection also includes a 32-page collector’s book, featuring an essay by author and film historian David Del Valle.

Shout!

This time around we’re treated to 7 Vincent Price classics, including a couple of his most popular films. My two favorites from this release, and honestly my two favorite Price films of all time, are The Last Man On Earth, and House on Haunted Hill. I had already watched House for the review, when my wife requested to watch it as well. We watched it with our four year old son, and he loved it. It’s hard to get him to sit still for longer than a few minutes, but he was enthralled by this black & white goodness. I think even he realized that they rarely make movies like they used to. The transfers of these film range from really good, to spectacular. No problems to report with the audio presentation as well. The extras are mostly fantastic as well. There is a wide scope of things for you to devour, such as new and old introductions, audio commentaries. still galleries, trailers, and featurettes. I will put a (mostly) full listing of extras below.

The highlight of this set, at least from my perspective, is to finally have House on Haunted Hill on the Blu-ray format. This is a film that I try and revisit once per year, and having it in this nice new collection is going to make it a lot easier to include in my October lineup of horror films. It looked and sounded great, and it was fun listening to some of the commentary by Film Historian Steve Haberman. This set gets a high recommendation from me. Even if you’re one of the younger horror fans, and have never actually seen a Vincent Price film, Scream Factory’s two Blu-ray collection of his films could act as the perfect education. The current price for this set on Amazon is 69.99, and it is well worth that, if not more. That’s under 10  bucks per movie in this set, and the whole presentation is extremely nice. If you’re a more budgeted shopper, however, you could set a price tracker for what you’re comfortable with on Blu-ray.com, and pick it up when it reaches your sweet spot. I know we’ve all spent a lot of money on Scream Factory’s releases lately, what with the Complete Halloween Collection, and the Limited Edition release of Nightbreed, but I can’t imagine anyone being disappointed in this new collection of classic Vincent Price films, even at full price. Hopefully there’s a Vincent Price Collection III in the works.
