If ever you’ve been watching Star Wars, or Mad Max, and thought to yourself “That’s great and all, but what I really want is a Z-grade, no-budget version of this” then Metalstorm from Charles Band has you covered. Metalstorm is a mash-up of both mentioned films, and maybe a bit of Dune thrown in for good measure. It’s rubber suits and refashioned clunkers in the desert. Scream Factory has released the film to Blu-ray, and I’ll be honest with you, this was the first time I’d ever sat down and watched it. I’d seen advertisements, and box covers, but it never grabbed me. Not only is the film on Blu-ray, but 3-D Blu-ray. For the purpose of this review, I viewed the 2-D version, as I seem to have given up my 3-D capabilities when I upgraded to a 4K TV. I honestly don’t have great things to say about this movie. Perhaps in missing the 3-D, I’m missing out on part of the joke. It wasn’t a terrible experience, and it’s a breezy eighty-four minute watch, but it is exactly what you think it is, having read the first sentence of this review.
Scream Factory’s Blu-ray release of the film is more than presentable. It features an all new transfer for both the 2-D, and the 3-D versions of the film, and of course a decent Stereo DTS-HD Master Audio track as well. It looks and sounds great, and even retains a little print damage, which adds even more charm to this retro cheese-fest. There’s a new retrospective documentary, which is probably better than the movie itself, as well as a massive promotional and behind-the-scenes gallery, an original radio spot, and the theatrical trailer. One thing I do know about Scream Factory, and that all of you should have learned by now, is that whether it is a certified cultural phenomenon like John Carpenter’s The Thing, or a movie like Metalstorm that many folks have never seen, Scream gives it the same love that every movie deserves, and this Blu-ray is no exception. If you are a fan of this film, this is certainly the definitive edition, and they have done it Justice. You can pick up a copy for yourself by clicking this link.
