When you look at the concept of Hardcore Henry, it’s hard to imagine that such a thing wasn’t really done before. I mean sure, there have been point-of-view shots in films since pretty much the dawn of time, and the handheld has taken over most production sets. But even with first person horror dominating the landscape for damn near two decades, we haven’t really seen an honest-to-goodness first person movie, not one designed to look and feel like a first person shooter, anyway. There was a sequence in Doom, and several other movies that tried to capture that feeling through brief shots here and there, but nobody has ever successfully put the viewer in the place that Hardcore Henry does. And it’s such an effective method that this movie might be a little too much for some viewers. I have heard reports from even those who were big fans of the film that it caused them to feel nauseous on more than one occasion. If a movie like Cloverfield made you sick to your stomach, Hardcore Henry is going to kick you in the genitals.
If your thing is exposition and well-written dialogue and fleshed out explanations for everything that happens, you may feel differently about the film than I do. Couple that with a percentage of the population that are totally excluded due to extreme motion sickness, and it’s safe to say that Hardcore Henry is a niche title. This won’t win over the indie drama crowd, but if you follow genre releases pretty closely, this is one to get excited about. The Blu-ray drops next week, the 26th of July, and though it is severely lacking in the bonus content department, I’m going to highly recommend you pick it up. We need more movies like this, less drama and more badassery. This Blu-ray does come with a couple of extras, including a few deleted scenes and an audio commentary, but there’s no behind-the-scenes footage, which is really disappointing. The way this movie was made — with a GoPro and a custom helmet and stabilization system — it would have been fascinating for some real footage of some of these stunts being executed. If you like inventive filmmaking and bloody, profane action movies, you’re going to love this.
