The John Carpenter Retrospective series continues this week featuring hosts Jeff Konopka and Shawn Savage discussing, in depth, Big Trouble in Little Chine starring Kurt Russell as Jack Burton. Even writing those words feels absolutely beyond epic. On the surface it is a simple story about a man and his truck, but it is truly much more than that. It is an action movie, comedy, sci-fi, Kung Fu classic with a hint of dark magic and a whole lotta innovations. This is a classic piece of 80’s cinema with all your favorite 80’s cliches done the way Carpenter wants ’em done. Before it was cool to rip off your heroes in a feature length movie while the rest of the audience observes and comments on your ability to borrow the work of others to a filmmakers artistic benefit, Carpenter created BTILC and the world laughed. Tune in. Laugh as well.
I urge you to listen in to gain the full effect of passionate fans discussing a movie they adore. This is Mr. Konopka’s all time favorite Carpenter flick which puts in the running for one of his favorite movies of all time. Considering the substantial resume of viewing that goes into a decision like this one can only assume that it is worth your time, especially if you are faithful devotee to Dead Air and the JCR series.
There will be a spoilers so make sure you get your butt in front of the TV prior to listening unless you’re a glutton for having the secrets stolen from a movie of this caliber.
