The Gate is being remade and I couldn’t be happier! I know, I know! I’m a purist and I usually say that remakes should never happen but this is one exception I will allow right off the bat. My love for Alex Winter doesn’t just stem from his role as the aloof but competent Bill S. Preston Esquire from Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. No no children, my love for Alex Winter comes from a fine film he made called Hideous Mutant Freaks, better know as FREAKED.
Winter performed the trifecta of writing, directing and starring in the film, which to this day holds up as one of the most original films I have had the pleasure of seeing. Freaked tells the story of a company that produces a toxic chemical tries to improve its image via a popular spokesperson, Ricky Coogan. Ricky travels to South America to get a first-hand look at the chemical’s effects and finds himself at a mutant freak farm. Elijah, who runs the farm, is only too happy to have new subjects on which to try his freak machine. The very chemical that Ricky is supposed to promote is the one responsible for creating the great variety of freaks, (Source:IMDB)
Now when it comes to the remake of The Gate it’s easy to understand why purists get upset as it is a classic in it’s own right. Another one of those 80s films that has a dedicated following, I know because I am one of the stricken. But here is one thing I don’t think people are thinking about; the fact that Alex Winter is a huge nerd who has proven that he can make original films and has an understanding of fandom and cult films in general.
I mean, if you look at the poster it seems as though the whole concept of honoring the film that came before it is firmly being culled. The poster is so similar to the original it could have been made for the sequel!
I like the fact that someone I trust to make an entertaining film is at the helm, I love that he is someone I’d love to see have more of a career after this. I’m thankful it isn’t the next big up and comer who took this project on for the experience and exposure. I may be the most excited purist in the universe right now.
