As a fan of cult classic exploitation romps and binges there are few sets that appeal to me as much as The 4 Cult Movie Marathon series from Shout Factory. With the two new volumes in this series, the first two volumes, they’re stepping into some ground that is wholly appropriate for the label and which has been dominated by the Drive-In Cult Classics series from Mill Creek Entertainment and touches on some of what has made the Vinegar Syndrome a breakthrough label in 2013. The competition between these moving parts could be incredible, digging ever deeper to uncover the raunchiest, campiest and most exploitative. That’s not to say there aren’t a horde of labels and series vying for the crown of king smut, but I’m enjoying what I’ve seen from Shout and Vinegar especially. When there’s no more room at the bottom of the barrel, look under the barrel and you’ll find the movies that make up the second volume of the Cult Movie Marathon series. We’ll talk about each one briefly in a review that will share time on both The Liberal Dead and DOCTERROR.COM.
We will discuss two movies on this side of the horror-verse and then transition to DOCTERROR.COM
You can pick up 4 Cult Movie Marathon Vol. 2 HERE NOW! I want to stress that these aren’t Hi-Def. They are not extra filled. They have crazy shit movies at a great price.
THE NAKED CAGE
Synopsis from Shout Factory – Michelle and Rita are arrested for theft and placed in the same cell. Their conflicts and personality clashes lead to screaming battles and cat fights before a prison riot brings deadly violence and newfound respect for each other. Shari Shattuck (Arena) and Angel Tompkins (The Teacher) star.
Of all the movies in the set, this was my favorite. Maybe I’m a sucker for women in prison flicks with their rape/revenge sub plots, elongated shower scenes filled with beautifully, ungroomed (read that avec pubic hair) and astounding scenes of mass rebellion. This one in particular was filled with hair and dress styles of the 80’s balanced with an appropriate amount of overacting and sweat mullets. The opening sequence to this film on the farm features some particular lovely 80’s cowgirl jeans, sports cars and horrific effects work that is laughable and pleasurable. The Naked Cage is unintentionally funny but still has some dignity left to spare as we approach the third act and see the beginnings of a cohesive prison rebellion. Make sure to stick around for the horse riding sequence toward the end of the picture. It’ll melt your heart, provide resolution and fill your vomit pale (or spank sock).
Synopsis from Shout Factory – A group of scantily-clad female prisoners sented to work under brutal conditions in a South American mine revolt against their captors with the aid of a band of jewel thieves,. Linda Blair (Chained heat), Leon Askin (Hogan’s Heroes) and Ajita Wilson (Hell Penitentiary) star.
Unfortunately this is my least favorite entry on the disc. Linda Blair appears as a mere afterthought and although there is a charming death-by-constrictor early on (burying women up to their heads in sand and then having snakes wrap themselves around them… neat) the rest of the movie plays out with unoriginal jungle action that, while may be arousing sexually, doesn’t offer much in the way of bombastic South American island riot. The Naked Cage provides plenty of what Savage Island wanted to achieve, is better quality and has hottier hotties. Being that this was the movie that had me the most interested in picking up the set to begin with, it was a let down, but the rest of the set more than makes up for its shortcomings.
To Be Continued… (the other two movies are reviewed on DOCTERROR.COM)
